5 Tips for Halloween With Sensory Kiddos

It’s officially October, the beginning of seasonal candy and cool(er) temps here in central Texas, and we all know what comes next. Halloween! During your preparation this year, while you’re stocking up on candy to pass out (and separate candy to hide from the kids), it’s time to start getting your kiddo used to their costume. Nothing is worse than trying to wrestle your kiddo into their costume in preparation for the Big Night, you’re now both in tears and ready to dress them in all red and call them an M&M for the evening.

A few key tips when Halloweening with your sensory kiddo:

1. Let’s start out on the right foot and help them choose a costume that will help set them up for success. Pay close attention to the fit and fabric (soft, not too tight/loose, not too itchy, etc) as well as the weight. We all know Texas summers like to go right up until Christmas, and no amount of candy is worth dehydration and sweaty undergarments.

2. Lots and lots of practice in their costume with positive reinforcement.

3. Some kiddos get very shy and overwhelmed with the constant transition between homes, speaking to strangers, and being noticed and praised. It could be beneficial to practice beforehand, possibly at school or with small groups of friends during a play date.

4. If your child is easily overwhelmed by loud or sudden sounds, consider incorporating noise canceling headphones into their costume in some way. Spooky decorations or loud music could become upsetting.

5. Have a back up plan of a preferred outfit or costume on the ready just in case your little one decides to back out last minute. As all the fashion greats know, accessories make the outfit and most kids are just excited for some candy and a chance to do something a little different.

Here are some kiddos who were definitely not in the Halloween spirit!
